Bass chord accompaniment

I've been experimenting with doing my own accompaniment while I sing. I
am a bass and usually need to transpose most of the chords down by about
four semitones from what is on the printed sheet.

So, for each song I go to the circle of 5ths and read the appropriate
new chord, write it down and play it in lieu of the printed chord.

This works, but it is a PITA. I'm wondering if there is an easier way to
get to a workable solution.

Would it be acceptable to put a Capo on the 4th fret, tune as usual
(EBGDAE), remove capo and play as usual?

Any other thoughts/schemes would be appreciated.

Try it. If it sounds OK, if it works for you, go with it. You don't need
anyone's permission. (You might want to go to heavier strings, though)
