Don't forget that a song is poetry put to music (or the other way
around) so you have to have the urge to write poetry as well as
compose music. I imagine that for most people one is easier to
do than the other. You can do really good words to simple music
(so the listener can understand them) or simple words to great
music (the listener probably won't care about the words). Of
course you could always do lousy lyrics on top of awful music
if you're into hip hop or metal.
There are probably many books on the subject, go to your library
and see what they have. One book guitar related book is :
